Phase I: Early Treatment

Dr. Brown follows the American Association of Orthodontists’ recommendation that parents should bring their children in for an evaluation at the first sign of an orthodontic problem or no later than age 7. Orthodontic treatment may or may not be necessary at that age, but visits at such an early age will ensure that your child receives the most effective orthodontic procedures when the time is right.

Generally, by the time your child turns 7, their first adult molars should have erupted, which creates the back bite. The back bite helps Dr. Brown study front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. Also, at this time, incisors are erupting and often indicate whether an excessive overbite, an open bite, crowding, or gummy smiles may be developing. By taking your child for a screening, you’ll know if your child is developing any of these issues and Dr. Brown will let you know when it’s the appropriate time to start early orthodontic or Phase I treatment.

Phase II: Adolescent Treatment

Phase II treatment usually means there was an earlier Phase I or early orthodontic treatment. If your child didn't have Phase I treatment, their care is considered adolescent treatment. Most patients undergoing phase two or adolescent treatment begin the process between the ages of 11 and 15. This is due to the fact that by the age of 12, most, if not all, of a child’s teeth have erupted. By this time, the teeth could have erupted crooked with gaps and bad bites that the doctor can easily detect.

Another reason why orthodontic treatment is more common at the time of adolescence is the social factor! Chances are your children have many friends who are also undergoing orthodontic treatment. Going through braces or Invisalign® is easier when a child goes through it with friends. Once the treatment is over your child will have more confidence with a smile that they can be proud of!

Adult Treatment

We're seeing more and more adult orthodontic patients these days, and it's not hard to figure out why. Appliances that are barely noticeable have been developed to give adults more discreet choices when it comes to orthodontic treatment. Fortunately, teeth can be repositioned at any age, meaning there's no such thing as being too old for braces. However, orthodontic treatment for adults is different than with kids and teens.

The growth and development of the jaws is complete in adults, so changes in actual jaw structure can't be accomplished with orthodontic appliances in the way they can with a growing child. Additionally, periodontal (gum) disease is more prevalent in adults than in children. To seek treatment and maintain your periodontal health, you will need to make sure to have regular professional cleanings and maintain good oral hygiene at home.

Braces

Our office offers a range of braces options, from traditional to discreet alternatives, each are tailored to straighten your smile comfortably and efficiently.

Traditional

Traditional metal braces, made of high-grade stainless steel, are the most common type of treatment. Today’s metal braces are smaller and more comfortable than ever.

Clarity

This innovative system of braces features small translucent brackets that are virtually invisible, so you won’t have to worry about matching your bracket color to the shade of your teeth.

Invisalign®

Dr. Brown is a Platinum Invisalign provider for teens and adults. Invisalign consists of a series of clear plastic trays aka “aligners” that align your teeth as well as or better than braces, depending on your orthodontic needs! This option allows for a more discreet and comfortable treatment experience that is popular among teens and adults.

Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery, also referred to as corrective jaw surgery, treats and corrects abnormalities of the facial bones, specifically the jaws and the teeth. These abnormalities can often cause difficulties associated with chewing, talking, sleeping, and other daily functions. Orthognathic surgery corrects these problems and, in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, will improve the overall appearance of the facial architecture.

Retainers

Essix

The Essix retainer is a transparent removable retainer that fits over the entire arch of teeth. Similar to Invisalign® trays, Essix retainers have no wires.

Memotain Lingual

Bonded lingual retainers are cemented directly to the inside surfaces of your teeth. The original position of your teeth will determine if you need a lingual retainer and, if so, which teeth it will be bonded to.
